Say hello to Lorde, MTV's Push Artist of the Month for October. She has just entered the record books as the youngest artist ever to have a No.1 song on the Billboard chart. At just 16 years old, her hit song "Royals" is circling the globe.
16-year-old New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde (a.k.a. Ella Yelich-O'Connor) released her first EP, ‘The Love Club EP’, with no marketing or publicity—and saw it shoot to #1 on the New Zealand album chart, while her track ‘Royals’ occupied the top spot on the singles chart. ‘Royals’ has already sold upwards of 1 million copies in the U.S. and gotten plenty of buzz—Selena Gomez even covered it in concert.
The daughter of a celebrated poet, Lorde was raised on a nutritious musical diet spanning from Neil Young to The Smiths to Etta James, and went on to discover an equally eclectic range of inspiring artists including Bon Iver, Animal Collective, and Drake. But as vital and varied as those influences are, they don’t really begin to tell the full story of Lorde’s music, which melds concentrated, sharp-eyed lyrics and multilayered vocals with crisp beatscapes. No wonder she’s the first female artist to top the U.S. ‘Billboard’ Alternative chart in more than 17 years—and no wonder she’s October’s PUSH artist!
All month long, MTV will be pushing Lorde’s music to fans around the globe. Stay tuned for exclusive live performances, interviews, and more opportunities to get to know this unique young talent and her just-released debut LP, ‘Pure Heroine’.
Stay Tuned until Oct. 4th when MTV will have an exclusive interview with Lordes .
